How did Gstaad Palace Come abOut?

It all started in 1905 when a local secondary school teacher, Robert Steffen (1878 - 1923), recognized the potential for a grand hotel on the Oberbort and purchased the first plots of land.

With help from his father-in-law and outside investors, the construction of the Palace Hotel started in April of 1911 with nearly 2.5 million Swiss Francs earmarked for the hotel, a very large investment at the time. The design was heralded by architects Adrien van Dorsser (1866–1957) and Charles-François Bonjour (1870–1961).

On December 8th, 1913, The Gstaad Palace opened its doors for the first time and has been a 5-star luxury hotel since opening.

In 1938, Ernst and Silvia Scherz took over the management of the Gstaad Palace and in 1947 they bought all the outstanding shares to make it a family-owned hotel.

To increase the numbers of guests in the 1960s, the Scherz Family decided to organize gala dinners with international stars such as Louis Armstrong and Marlene Dietrich, which allowed the hotel to gain notoriety worldwide.

In 1971, the famous nightclub GreenGo opened and became the most popular club in the area. To this day, GreenGo remains as it was and transports guests back to the 70’s with great nostalgia.

In December of 2013, the hotel proudly celebrated its 100th anniversary which is commemorated in Gstaad Palace’s anniversary book.

Nowadays, the Gstaad Palace is one of the few remaining family-owned hotels and is managed by the third generation of the Scherz Family.

After all these years, the hotel remains an icon of the Saanenland.
